What is Neurodivergence?
Neurodivergence is a non-medical term used to describe individuals whose brains process, learn, and/or behave in ways that diverge from what is generally considered typical or standard within the general population. Essentially, it means a person’s brain “works differently.” This concept is part of the broader framework of neurodiversity, which posits that variations in human brain function are natural and valuable, much like biodiversity in an ecosystem. There is no single, “correct” way for a brain to function.
Neurotypical vs. Neurodivergent
To help understand neurodivergence, it may help to define its counterpart:
Neurotypical: Refers to people whose cognitive functioning, social skills, learning styles, and behavior fall within the range considered standard or typical by society.
Neurodivergent: Refers to individuals whose cognitive functioning diverges from that typical range.
It’s important to note that neurodivergent is not a diagnosis itself, though it often describes people with specific diagnosed conditions. It is a way of framing these differences in terms of natural human variation rather than deficit.
Common Examples of Neurodivergence
While the definition is broad and can sometimes be self-identified, the term is most commonly used to describe people with certain neurodevelopmental conditions, including:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Dyslexia (difficulty with reading),
- Dyspraxia (difficulty with coordination)
- Dyscalculia (difficulty with math).
- Tourette Syndrome
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A person can have one or multiple of these characteristics, and they can overlap. While conditions like anxiety or depression can certainly affect neurodivergent individuals, they are generally classified as mental health conditions rather than being intrinsic forms of neurodivergence, though the lines can be complex.
Strengths and Challenges
The neurodiversity perspective emphasizes that different brain wiring brings both unique strengths and challenges:

Neurodivergent individuals often face societal barriers due to systems and environments designed primarily for neurotypicals. These challenges can include:
- Sensory Issues: Being easily overwhelmed by common stimuli like bright lights, loud noises, or certain textures.
- Social Differences: Difficulty interpreting subtle social cues or preferring communication styles that differ from the majority.
- Executive Functioning: Challenges with organization, task initiation, time management, or sustained attention (though this varies greatly).
Strengths:
Conversely, these different processing styles often lead to significant strengths:
- Intense Focus: The ability to “hyperfocus” on areas of deep interest.
- Pattern Recognition: An aptitude for noticing details or complex patterns that others miss.
- Creativity and Innovation: Unique problem-solving approaches that lead to novel ideas.
- Deep Expertise: The capacity to develop profound knowledge in specific areas.
